I am still trying to figure out a way to make hand washing more fun… or at least tolerable!
The last time we were at the doctor Baby Babe’s pediatrician told us that we should just get used being sick. She said it’s very common to have a cold for two weeks, be better for a day or two then start the cycle all over again. I threw a little bit of a fit when she told me that.
I’m so glad we have changed to a new pediatrics office instead of the family care because she was understanding and compassionate about how I felt. I just don’t feel OK accepting that we will continue to be continuously sick until the spring. She told me that this first fall and winter of having a baby who is out exploring the world will be the sickest until she starts kindergarten and is introduced to a whole new group of kids. If I keep her locked up this year it will hit her hard next year.
So, what can we do? Hibernate? Close ourselves up at home and never come out until July? Rent one of those bubbles that your see at the state fair? Soak our bodies in Germ-X? haha! Well, I’ve heard that using hand sanitizer is not safe for babies. I read about a 2 year old who had to go to the ER because she licked her hand and got drunk. Maybe that’s an urban legend, but I’m going to stick with good old fashioned soap and water.
Elmo is a big hit in our house right now. Actually, he’s known as “Baboo.” I saw this Elmo soap at the Dollar Tree and I grabbed two. I do find it helps her wiggle a little less when I ask her to find Elmo and sing Elmo’s Song.
I’ve also tried bringing a chair to the sink for her to stand on, that way she doesn’t have to squash her tummy. She’s still a little short to reach but it’s worth it!
I made some little sponge balls for her to squeeze while washing our hands. Simply cut sponges into strips and zip tie them together! It’s as easy as that!
A few days ago I filled one bowl with sudsy sponge balls and a tub with clean water and clean sponge balls for rinsing. It was fun to have water play as a way to wash up!
We are going to keep working at figuring out how to make hand washing more fun. Please share your ideas in the comments section! Thank you!
